Remember basic training

Wow, I will try to remember that moment in time.

In the summer of 1973, I was employed with the local public school system. Prior to working, I had enlisted with the Armed Forces, had taken the military tests and was hoping to be ready to enlist with the Air Force. The testing sergeant had informed me that I didn't make it. I was really counting on this, so as I started to leave the testing area, a staff sergeant asked me to follow him (my first orders). I was greeted by other personnel and told that my butt was going to be sent to Fort Knox, Ky., but my first stop was Richmond, Va., for more paperwork and a physical. Then I was met by a Sgt. W. Fitzwater, who gave me a ride home. Upon getting home, I introduced him to my father and mother. The following week I boarded a civilian bus and then a civilian plane to said post. Then from there, I was U.S Government property as part of the U.S. Army.

Wow, what a change from civilian life to that. It was then I noticed I was in the military. I had taken orders from my parents, but nothing like this. After more paperwork, the drill instructor ordered the company or platoon to turn in our CIVs, and we were given hair cuts and issued military gear and dog tags. A fast eight weeks was ahead.

I will add this: The military does and will separate the girls and boys from the women and men.
