Worst memory, fondest memory of basic training

Christmas Day 1954, while on kitchen police duty, I cleaned a grease trap on Tank Hill at Fort Jackson, S.C., with a half-pint milk bottle. This was the lowest I have ever felt.

The Fourth of July found me at Mt. Meade, Md., as a proud 82nd Airborne paratrooper on temporary duty. This was as high as I got.
