I can remember in 1961 Navy basic training at Great Lakes—getting up at 5 a.m. and walking through 2 feet of snow to the chow hall. I also remember hanging my wet uniforms on the clothesline outside of the barracks, and if I forgot to take them down before sunset they would be frozen solid.
