A new life

I grew up in orphanages and foster homes in the 1930s and 1940s (what I can remember). It was abusive, and I kept trying to "escape," only to be brought back over and over.

One time in the early 1950, I made it good, and while living with a foster family, I met a Navy recruit himself and befriended him.

I am now 80 years old and will never forget that the first day of my life would begin on March 9, 1955, when I first enlisted in the Army and began basic training. I was sort of shocked to find out I would get $54 a month all for myself. I was taught and actually enjoyed various military training and physical activities (like all recruits get). I was amazed (after my past life treatment) that I had my own bed and food. It seemed like heaven to me at the time, regardless of how tough it seems. I had everything I always wanted. I was on my own, had my own clothes, food, housing, pay and could do as I wanted on my own time. I also made good friends. All I can say is that basic was the best decision I made when my Navy friend told me I should join.

I went on to stay for over 20 years and retired, still getting paid! Basic was great, and I recommend it to any young person who wants to make something of their lives these days.
