I was a seventeen-year-old in Basic Training at Fort Belvoir in 1946.

I had a few scraggly facial hairs and the Platoon Sergeant told me to shave.

Later, we were having a practice formal inspection with our M-1 Garands and when the Sergeant got to me, he inspected my rifle and then turned to the Corporal and said, "Case, Destroying Government Property!"

Back inside the barracks, I asked the Sergeant what he had found wrong with my care of the rifle. He said, "You cut yourself shaving!"
