Don't never volunteer for nothing!

Upon completion of Basic, I was sent to Fort Bliss for the NIKE missile school. While waiting for the beginning of a class, our package was sent to Red Canyon Range Camp to pull detail. There we were offloaded from the Six-bys and lined up in formation. First Sgt. Johnny Nail welcomed us and asked if there were any typists in the group. Well, I had been through Basic and had learned the old Army axiom, "Don't never volunteer for nothing." Well one of the guys who had been in Basic with me hadn't learned that. He was standing behind me in the formation and pushed me forward with the comment, "We are." I was pushing back into the Formation and trying to get an elbow into the pusher's ribs. Well, Sgt. Nail was Johnny on the spot and had us fall out to the office. But lo and behold, he really did need someone to type the Daily Report and and other missives. When those chores were completed, we were to straighten up the Day Room and hang out. The rest of the Platoon were assigned to rake rocks, and clean up the mess left from when the Mess Hall had burned. That was our assignment for the remainder of the Detail. But the experience didn't change my rule about volunteering.
