My basic training memory goes back before I enlisted in the Army. You see, I want to enlist in the Army before I finished high school. I remember looking at a Life magazine and seeing a photograph of soldiers with bloused boots. I liked the photograph and decided that I wanted to enlist when I finished high school. My mother recommended that I delay the enlistment until I finish at least two years of college. She did not want to see any more children in the service, because my father was a career soldier with 30 years of service: my older brother was serving a 20 year career in the Army; and my other brother was serving in the Marines. I told my mother I would delay my enlistment and go to college for two years.
