A military mosquito’s memorial

Early summer of 1966, I was stationed in Cape May, N.J. undergoing basic training for USCG. It was early evening in our barracks relaxing writing letters, polishing boots, and fooling around when a mosquito was noticed. We chased him around the barracks and killed him and we were acting silly and noisy. When the OD heard the commotion and came charging in. With that we were assembled outside, in full dress with the dead mosquito in a shoe box, one recruit wearing his pea coat on backwards holding a bible (CG manual), as the minister. The color guard and band were also assembled and we paraded down to the beach and buried our poor mosquito with full military honors.
