BUFF that floor, Private!

October 1962, Ft. Knox, Ky. USATCA C 8-3
At that time I was a dining room orderly on my first kitchen patrol duty. I was to buff the mess hall floor with a power buffer. This farm boy had never seen a floor buffer before, let alone operated one! If you are unfamiliar with a buffer, it will take you across the floor – not the other way around. After banging up the tables and chairs, I told the mess sergeant that I did not think I could run the buffer. “Well, little bitty, Private. I got me a grease trap that needs cleaning!” I replied, “Sergeant, I definitely can run the buffer!” This must have humored the old Sarge, because he laughed and said, “Here, boy. Let me show you how!”
After that, no problems. Needless to say, the mess hall floor shined like never before!
