Yes, SIR!

This is one of the worst memories I had at Fort Jackson, S.C. The year was 1954, and I had joined the Army rather than be drafted. I had just turned 19. The Army believed in much physical training (PT), and every day the word was “more PT.” The Company “A” 8th Infantry was on the field and ready for their daily exercise. A young officer, a second lieutenant, came up to me and asked, “Soldier, how old are you?” I did look very young for my age. I said “Nineteen.” He said “Nineteen what?” I replied “Nineteen years.” He just shook his head and walked away. He wanted to hear “Nineteen, SIR!” What did I know, being from the hills of North Carolina and only in the Army a few weeks?! I had not acquired the correct military language yet. Later, I became very good at those things and am now retired Air Force.
