On Veterans Day (Nov. 11), a free noon luncheon for veterans, spouses, caregivers and veterans' widows is made possible by donations of game, turkey and money by local business people and friends. The luncheon is hosted by Willmar Post 167.
This dinner is a long-standing tradition. It started decades ago and was financed by Norm Tallakson. Fifty veterans enjoyed this meal. Following Tallakson's death the dinner was financed by Reuben (Duffer) Adams, Harvey Caldwell and Dennis Jordahl.
After his fellow veterans passed away in 1986, Jordahl enlisted a group of veterans and friends to make sure this tradition of serving a free luncheon to veterans continued.
It is now served to 550 veterans and guests. It is hosted by veterans and friends of veterans, under Jordahl's guidance.
