GI Bill gave me wings

Galveston , TX

I was a young airman stationed at Randolph AFB, Texas, when I subtly convinced my wife and mom of our one-year-old that it would be better for me to learn to fly than buy another Harley (after months in the hospital on E-2 pay from accident). She was willing, but how could we afford it? I whipped out the GI Bill paperwork and told her it would pay most of the training plus I had a second job secured packing groceries at the BX. Nothing would come out of the family's budget. In two years I went from pre-solo to commercial instrument, multi-engine instructor, and the last check ride on my last day of service. Quite a few low-paying jobs followed but 11 years later I was hired as a first officer for Southwest Airlines. I've just celebrated my 27th year in my dream job. Could it have happened without the GI Bill? No. I shudder to think of the future as an unskilled young man with a family. Thanks, VA, and a big thanks to the Legion for making it happen.
