Double the pleasure

Columbia, SC

The GI Bill saved my "bacon" twice. I first used it to attend college after serving in the Air Navy. Later, my job caused me to be transferred from Memphis to Atlanta. I was married a short time later and we had an opportunity to buy a house. I could not have afforded it had I not had the GI Bill. I used it to buy that house in Atlanta. Later I had an opportunity for advancement to manage a branch office back in Memphis. I bought another house, but this time bought it through the FHA. A few years past and my wife contracted brain cancer. She was paralyzed on one side and her brain was affected. I now had two small children and a wife who would live only a short time. Fortunately, my mother and sister also lived in Memphis, but in an apartment. We decided the best thing to do was to combine our households so they could take care of the kids. Again I looked for a house I could afford that would be large enough for all of us. I had some equity in my present house, but not enough to make another FHA purchase. My real estate woman was a sharp character and very interested in our plight! She asked many questions and investigated my time in service. She discovered that I had actually served during two different GI Bills. One for WW2 and one for the Korean War. My time in service overlapped the two! I had no idea of that and did not know I could use them both. I was able, because of her, to buy another house on the GI Bill and consolidate our households. I am not only grateful to her, but to the Congress that made it possible for me to DOUBLE MY PLEASURE! THANKS TO GOD AND COUNTRY.
