How the GI Bill turned a farm boy into a CPA

Tyrone, PA

I was a farm boy (Tyrone, Pa.) who got drafted into the U.S. Army at 21 years of age (1965). After discharge in 1967, I took the civil service test and got a part-time job offer at a nearby post office. I decided to go to a two-year school in Altoona, Pa., and major in public accounting. My monthly college costs were $130 a month; my GI educational benefits were also $130 a month. After the two years there, I went to a college in Cleveland and received my B.S. (majoring in public accounting). For the 4 years of college (working part-time jobs to help the cash flow), I only needed to borrow around $2,000. Without the GI benefits, I may have not had the opportunity to be in the accounting tax field that I loved immensely.
