From E-4 to Ph.D.

Carrollton , TX

I enlisted in the military in December 1972. I was a jock in high school and graduated in the bottom quarter of my class.
Went to basic training in Fort Knox, AIT in Fort Polk, jump school at Fort Benning and jungle school at Fort Sherman, and was stationed with the 82nd Airborne as a 4.2 mortar man. I left the military in 1976 and began my college career. Completed a B.A., M.Div., M.A. and Ph.D., and taught counseling courses and provided mental health treatment to veterans and civilians.
My military training provided me the discipline, courage and resilience to complete years of service to others.

Who would think this kid from Louisville would eventually retire as a faculty member from the University of Oklahoma?

Balmer, in top row second from left, basic training.
