Medal of Honor recipient remembered

Thomas Hopkins American Legion Post 4 - Wichita, KS

Thomas Hopkins American Legion Post 4, Wichita, Kan., has adopted the gravesite of a World War II Army Medal of Honor recipient. Legion member Herb Duncan found an abandoned, unkept, overgrown grave site in the Wichita Park Cemetery with a military bronze flat marker underneath. After clearing some weeds from the marker he was astonished to read the words CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR! It was the grave of Medal of Honor recipient Army Pvt. 1st Class Richard Eller Cowan.
Each year on Memorial Day since 2021, Post 4 conducts a wreath-laying ceremony, reads the profile about PFC Richard Eller Cowan and the citation of his actions on December 17, 1944. Taps will be sounded and the memory of PFC Cowan will be remembered.
The gravesite, with an American flag and a blue Medal of Honor flag, is being maintained by Post 4. If You Are Remembered, You Will Never Be Forgotten.
