George F. Dashiell American Legion Post 49 - Smithfield, VA

History of the namesake of Post 49, George F. Dashiell.
Younger brother of a founding member and Post Commander, George F. Dashiell left the Virginia Military Institute in June 1917, after completing his second year. He completed a commissioning program and was commissioned in the Infantry. His brother Harry G. Dashiell Sr. also served in the AEF as an Artillary Captain. George F. Dashiell received bravest promotions and was a machine gun company commander when he was KIA on 10 November 1918. Both his brothers' children had distinguished national service careers, Harry Jr. retiring as a Senior CIA executive analyst and John "Jack" Dashiell's having been awarded a Silver Star in Korea and having commanded an automobile infantry battalion in S. Vietnam, retiring as a distinguished Infantry Colonel.
A display of the American Legion VN War coins of all services and significant actions is on display along with U.S. military Valor and exceptional service Medals.
Photos and Action Programs are displayed throughout the post. The building is rented to the public, and the public attends for ceremonies and Bingo fund raising.
