American Legion provides drop box for flags

Hiawatha, KS

Hiawatha, Kan. American Legion Homer White Post 66 Vice Commander Steve Winter is shown with the retired-flag drop box he prepared for the Brown County community. The post, after considering several locations for placing the box, requested permission from the Brown County Commissioners to allow installation in the court house. Approval was immediate, and in the first three weeks approximately 75 flags have been collected. The Brown County Court House was determined to be the best-secured, dry and higher-traffic location for the drop box. The Legion had already planned a flag retirement ceremony for October of this year and it would appear they will have a large number of flags to retire. This ceremony will be held on the Brown County Court House grounds in Hiawatha. Steve indicated that the idea for the flag drop box came from a picture and article in The American Legion Magazine.
