American Legion history

San Diego, CA

A Legionnaire and friend, Steve Lewandowski, from Encinitas Post 416, shared this great photo of Legion history with me.
There was a time when, if you were not at a Legion post on a Friday or Saturday night, then you were not doing anything.
The history of our Legion is rich, with many accomplishments. Pictured here, for your pleasure, is the American Legion in Dubuque, Iowa, during the winter of 1932.
What you see is a convoy of trucks (notice the signs in the windows) that the Legionnaires used to venture from the city to gather firewood for handing out to the poor so they could be warm on Christmas Day.
They are actually staged at 801 Bluff St.
Thanks, Steve, for the great photo. I cannot help but think that when these Legionnaires took this photograph, they had no idea that someday we would have the capabilities to electronically send it out in the world forever - and therefore permanently record their good deeds for posterity!
