KP at Fort Riley

Novi, MI

In the summer of 1963 I was attending my ROTC summer camp at Fort Riley, Kan. My buddy Chuck and I volunteered for the afternoon KP duty over the 4th of July weekend.
We had rumors that the mess sgt. was very unpleasant to work for and that he gave the young officers a lot of grief.
Both Chuck and I had extensive campus kitchen experience. Our plan was to do all duties assigned to us joyfully and very fast. We accomplished our mission perfectly - running to the sgt. after finishing each job and asking for additional jobs. This truly upset the sgt., as he probably never had any soldiers that did KP with such spirit and speed.
This made our KP duty very enjoyable for us and not so enjoyable for our mess sgt.
