When the Coast Guard "saddled up"

Denville, NJ

I enjoyed the Legion magazine's article about the "Mounted Military" and I'm sure many of my fellow Legionnaires did as well. It also reminded me of a Coast Guard history lesson from boot camp back in 1967, in which we learned about the Coast Guard's mission in World War II. One aspect of the mission was the protection of our homeland from foreign saboteurs. After Germany successfully landed four saboteurs on a beach in Long Island, the FBI became instrumental in organizing Coast Guard beach patrols along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. Many were foot patrols with sentry dogs, and very many were also mounted patrols. The Army provided the horses, saddles and riding gear. This quickly became the dominant form of beach patrol with more than 3,000 horses deployed. This was an excellent example of interservice cooperation; something the Coast Guard has been recognized for throughout its 230-year history.

Kind regards.
