Fifty years of continuous membership for Sergio J. Morales

1Lt Felix Rigau Post 36, Department of Puerto Rico, added a little extra to its 2021 Veterans Day celebration activities. Honored was Past Department Chaplain/Past Post Commander Sergio J. Morales for 50 consecutive years of American Legion membership.
Morales is a native of Sabana Grande, Puerto Rico, where as a youth and young man he excelled in the Catholic Church, the Boy Scouts of America and as a firefighter. In March 1963, after graduating from high school, he volunteered for the United States Army. He served several years in Europe as a communication specialist. After the tours in Europe, he transferred to the National Guard Company B 296th Infantry in Sabana Grande, where he was recognized for his knowledge in communications and firearms. In 1967 he received an award for best rifle expert shooter in the battalion.
He joined Post 111 in Hormigueros, Puerto Rico, and immediately made an impact assisting veterans and families from the Korean and Vietnam wars. He transferred to Post 36 of Sabana Grande, where he led the charge to obtain a clubhouse and collect the military memorabilia from B Company 296th Infantry and other military items from the area.
Morales retired from public service, where he was a public health inspector, and is now living the country life along with his wife Carmen Lorenzo. He continues to reach out and assist veterans.
