Clarksville’s American Legion Post 289 takes over as Scout BSA charter organization

Clarksville, TN

Scouts BSA, also known as "The First Ladies” Troop 21, has served the youth of Clarksville and Montgomery County since Feb 1, 2019. And as of 1 March 2022, CSM Gary W. Crisp American Legion Post 289 has become the troop’s new charter organization. The American Legion regards this as a great opportunity to join two organizations with common goals of working with the youth in the community to teach them the value of community service and learning leadership skills for the betterment of the community and themselves.

Not only do these two organizations share common goals, but they also share leadership. Dawn Schmidt, former president of Auxiliary Unit 289, was instrumental in working with the troop leadership for its first charter. Douglas Kirby is the current post Scouting chairman and Chrisie Moore also is a member of the Scouting leadership. Chrisie is a member of Unit 289 and stepped down as the first Scoutmaster to assume the role of charter organizational representative for the all-girls troop. In addition, Douglas has been a longtime American Legion member.

Doug currently oversees the post’s five Scouting units. Currently, Post 289 has the most chartered Scout units in the entire Department of Tennessee, according to Ernest Schmidt, department Scouting chairman.

Kelly Keli’I–Rondon, who has been the Scoutmaster, will continue in that role. The current troop committee chair is Stephanie Hayes, who also will continue in that role. Under this leadership, the troop has already had its first Eagle Scout, Gabby Kowalski. Chrisie Moore, the current COR for Unit 289, will remain with Troop 21 and help Doug run the troop; she is the outgoing Scoutmaster. David Zeveney, current commander of Post 289, will act as charter organization executive officer for the Scout troops chartered by the post.

Some of the projects American Legion Post 289 and Scouts have collaborated on include the annual Four Chaplains Memorial Service, poppy sales at the Fort Campbell Post Exchange, and an Eagle project to install a boat ramp in Billy Dunlop Park. They expect with this partnership this list will certainly grow.

If you have a daughter looking to become a Scout and would like to join Troop 21, you can contact Kelly Rondon, the Scoutmaster.
