Inaugural Gold Star Legacy Poker Run

La Plata, MD

We’re American Legion Riders Chapter 82 riding out of American Legion Post 82 in La Plata!

Our post has over 800 members with nearly 50 American Legion Rider members. We’re a very active chapter with rides to places with historical significance and supporting local veterans causes.

For several years our chapter has participated in fundraisers and collected funds to support a cause that is close to our hearts, the American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund (https://www.legion.org/scholarships/legacy). To be able to give back to the families that have sacrificed for their country is an absolute honor.

Last year, with a lot of help from our Post 82 family, we contributed over $8,000 to the $65,000 raised in the state of Maryland. All funds raised in the state are distributed back to applicants from the state. We did this through fundraising spaghetti dinners, personal donations and donations from the Legion, Sons of The American Legion and Auxiliary. Our local goal this year is $20,000 and we are confident we can hit that number through our Inaugural Gold Star Legacy Poker Run on May 14 (rain date, May 21). We already have commitments from riders in Calvert, St Mary's and Charles counties as well as Towson and Severna Park, Md., and Springfield, Va. We expect to have upwards of 100 riders and numerous guests attending the finale stop and after-ride party. The majority of our participants are everyday blue- and white-collar workers who, like us, have an affinity for our military members and their families.

But we need more riders and we need more sponsors! We want this ride to be as great as it can be, and for that we need riders! And we would be honored to raise as much money as possible for such a wonderful cause as the Legacy Scholarship Fund. No amount is too small or too big.

Our community is absolutely amazing, and the support of its riders, community members and businesses is everything to making this ride a success. A success for the ride is a success for the families it helps support and serve.
