American Legion Post 558 of Malta Bend honors World War II veteran brothers

Malta Bend, MO

A scholarship honoring two local World War II veterans was recently established by American Legion Post 558 of Malta Bend. The veterans, brothers John Sullivan and Oden Sullivan, were active in various Legion activities, including scholarship review. At the regular meeting of the post on Feb. 21, a motion was made and approved establishing a scholarship in their name, honoring both for their service to the nation, community, youth and The American Legion. At the post’s regular meeting on April 18, Steven Sullivan of Marshall, son of John Sullivan and nephew of Oden Sullivan, was presented a copy of the resolution establishing the scholarship.

John Sullivan served in the U.S. Army Air Forces in the Pacific Theater, while Oden Sullivan served in the U.S. Navy, also in the Pacific theater. The brothers had a combined total of 99 years of membership in The American Legion at Post 558, and the presentation was made on what would have been John W. Sullivan’s 100th birthday.

Brothers John and Oden Sullivan both served in the Pacific theater in World War II, with John in the U.S. Army Air Forces, and Oden in the U.S. Navy.
