The Pearl Harbor Songs

"The Pearl Harbor Songs," a CD released in conjunction with the 75th anniversary of the December 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor, was produced by fellow Legionnaire Cordell Keith Haugen of Post 0019 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The CD features 13 cuts, including all four of the "Pearl Harbor" songs, two penned by Haugen, and two by CPO Gordon Freitas (USN Ret.) The recordings feature the voices of Haugen and Freitas, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye, with backup by The Patriots, Local Folk, The Sounds of Aloha Chorus, Don Humphrey, Bob Nelson and others.

Although the new CD is available in Navy, Army & Air Force exchanges in the Islands, as well as several museum gift shops, none provides mail order service.

Haugen is offering a special price to members of the American Legion. The $10 per CD (includes $3.00 cost for packaging and postage) is approximately 50% less than the retail price.

Cordell Keith Haugen is a member of The American Legion Post 0019, Department of Hawai`i, a former U.S. Army Staff Sergeant, a retired educator, singer/songwriter, from a family of veterans. His father, Anton J. Haugen, U.S. Army in WWI, was for many years, Post Adjutant of the American Legion post in his home town, Lake Bronson, MN. His mother, Gudrun (Hultgren) Haugen was Chaplain of the Post Auxiliary. His brothers served in the Army too, in WWII, Korea, Vietnam. Among more than 200 songs that he has written, Keith has won recognition for his patriotic and other military-related compositions and recordings, including awards from the Hawai`i State Legislature, American Legion, Military Order of the Purple Heart, U.S. Sen. Spark M. Matsunaga Institute for Peace, and professional music organizations. His latest release is a CD called "The Pearl Harbor Songs," which features all four Pearl Harbor Songs. He composed six of the 13 songs/poems on the collection, including "Yes, We Remember," which was narrated by the late U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye, known for his mellifluous voice, and as a Medal of Honor recipient for heroic combat service in WWII in Italy. Keith's "We Still Care, The Pearl Harbor Commemorative Song," was premiered in 50th anniversary ceremonies (December 1991)at the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor and as the theme song for the half-time show of the Aloha Bowl Game, Christmas Day 1991, at Aloha Stadium.
