467 dogs donated to the military served in Vietnam. They were trained to detect, alert and detain the enemy. US Air Force Security Police Sentry dogs owned the night time perimeter of nine air baes. Dogs were 100% effective disabling every penetration to attack the base by Viet Cong Sapper Teams. Sappers were terrified of the dogs as they approached a lonely canine post while prostrate on the jungle floor. Dogs would often alert and pull their handlers toward a Sapper Team as they quickly retreated seamlessly back to their safe line. Most people never knew the presence or efficiency of a pet dog turned combatant. Dogmen loved their duty as did the dogs, too.
