Shop With a Cop in Aberdeen

Aberdeen, MD

On Sunday, Dec. 7, 2014, in Aberdeen, Maryland, the American Legion Riders of the Bernard L. Tobin Post 128 and the Aberdeen Police Department teamed up for their first "Shop With a Cop."

The starting point was The American Legion Bernard L. Tobin Post 128, where members of the post and the Aberdeen Police Department met up with several children from the Aberdeen community who, for no reason of their own, would probably not be able to enjoy Christmas due to financial or extenuating circumstances. The Aberdeen Police Department assisted by pairing up an officer with a child, or children of a family. They then took them, in their police vehicles, to the local Walmart to assist them in their purchases.

The American Legion Riders provided escort to and from the store. Upon return to the Post for some lunch, donated by a local cafe, the children met with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus while their gifts were being wrapped. In addition, each family was given a turkey and some trimmings for their Christmas meal.

Special thanks to the Aberdeen Police Department for its enthusiastic support for this effort. It is about community and our support of it. An excerpt from our constitutional preamble: “To inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state and nation ... "

Happy Holidays to all, and for those, Merry Christmas. I know mine has already been made very happy and I feel quite merry.
