SAN ANTONIO – (March 17, 2023) – Women’s History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28 which authorized and requested the president to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982, as “Women’s History Week.”

Fred Brock Post 828 honors the contributions of women who have served and are serving in the military, to include women of the American Legion Family. The post celebrates these women for the richness and diversity of their achievements in March and throughout the year.

Once such woman is Kathy Robinson, who serves as an Auxiliary lady-at-large with Unit 828.

Robinson, a native of Natchitoches, La., joined the Auxiliary in 2018 after being recruited by the late Vanessa Sauls, who influenced her to join the Post 828 Pool Team.

“I’m always eager to meet new people, and it is an everlasting experience to meet our heroes and sheroes who served this great country,” said Robinson. “Joining the Auxiliary allowed me to be part of various activities and be a positive influence in my community.”

Robinson, who has been the captain of the post’s pool team for four years, has been playing pool for more than 40 years.

“My mother, Ruby Brown, led me to the game of pool,” said Robinson, who has won eight city pool championships and a national championship in Las Vegas. “She was a pool shooter and I wanted to follow in her footsteps.”

Robinson has also been recognized on several occasions for the Ladies Top Shooter Award.

“My personal goal is to eventually become one of the top pool shooters in the nation,” said Robinson, who will retire in December from the City of San Antonio as an accounting supervisor with 26 years of service.

She says that the most rewarding part of being in the Auxiliary, other than playing pool, is talking to the elders and hearing their stories.

Robinson was eligible for membership under her late father and member of Post 828 Eugene Brown, a Purple Heart recipient, who served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
