Thunder in the Mountains

Francis Scott Key Post 11 - Frederick, MD

Frederick Legion Riders met Sgt. Adam kisielewski USMC in Thurmont Md on the very cold morning of March 25th with the temperature at 24 degrees. Twenty-five riders met to escort him along with the local and state police for the forty minute ride to Libertytown and the opening ceremony for a Home for our Troops build brigade weekend. A hundred or so volunteers met to build him a house in just a three day weekend, completely framed in, siding, windows and roofed.

We were notified the key ceremony was going to be on July 16, 2011 the same day as our American Legion annual Legacy Fund three day camp out event at American Legion's camp in Thurmont, MD.

On the beautiful morning of July 16th 2011 the Frederick Legion Riders met Adam Kisielewski in Thurmont with about 100 motorcycles and police escort to take him to his new handicapped accessible home. Adam lost his left arm at the shoulder and his right leg below the knee near Fullujah, Iraq in 2005.

As we came up his long driveway volunteers and patriot guard had formed a flag line a couple hundred feet long. What a site for our wounded Marine and all of us escorting him.

Then we gathered for the ceremony, the Frederick Legion Riders provided the honor guard, Frederick Riders Sgt-At-Arms, Steve Plumley gave a 5 minute speech thanking all the volunteers, his Legion Riders and especially Adam for his sacrifice to our country. Frederick Legion Riders Director Oscar Shankle also presented him with a boots on the ground drawing framed and signed on the back by all the Frederick Legion Riders. Adam said it will be hung in his house forever.

Afterwards, it was back to the Thunder in the mountains Legacy Fund camp-out at Camp West Mar in Thurmont Md. We had perfect weather for an overnight camp out with about 120 Legion Riders. We had a motorcycle rodeo, food, drinks, pool, camp fire, and games all adding up to a great happy and moving weekend and a $2,000 donation to the American Legion Legacy
