Five Legion posts develop county salute/assistance for veterans and families

Ashburn, VA

Loudoun County government, in partnership with five American Legion posts (Sterling Park, Ashburn, Leesburg, Purcellville and Middleburg], will unite with local veterans charitable organizations and the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce to host the first Salute to Military, Veterans and Families on Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Stone Bridge High School, Ashburn Va.

The event is focused on providing support directly to veterans and their families, and will lead to the creation of a new county office for veteran transition services and the increased synergy of support organizations.

Featured speakers include: Allison Hickey, Under Secretary for Benefits, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs; Brigadier General Thomas Gorry, U.S. Marine Corps, Director, National Defense University; Bill Bryant, National Vice Commander, American Legion; Paul Galanti, Commissioner, Virginia Department of Veterans Services; Gerald Rhoads, Commander, Department of Virginia, American Legion; Dick Black, Senator, 13th District, Virginia General Assembly; Scott York, Chairman, Loudoun County Board of Supervisors; Shawn Williams, Vice Chairman, Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, Broad Run District; Ralph Buona, Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, Ashburn District; and Tony Howard, President/CEO, Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce. Loudoun County will present a proclamation on behalf of all Veterans.

Veterans and their families will have the opportunity to meet and discuss VA benefits and claims issues with veteran service officers from the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans, and the Marine Corps League. The event will also provide certification for new Legion service officers.

A performance by the world renowned Medical Music Group’s brass section directed by Lisa Eckstein will entertain during the event.

Following the formal program, attendees will be invited to visit with veteran service organizations, including Operation Homefront, Boulder Crest Retreat; Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes; Virginia Wounded Warrior Program; the USO; Freedom Alliance; the Virginia Department of Veteran Services and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
