Huntingdon County Military Share Food Program - combating hunger

Huntingdon, PA

We would like to tell you about a program we implemented in Huntingdon, Pa., to feed low-income military families once a month.
We partnered with the Central PA Food Bank of Harrisburg, Pa., to provide three types of meat, eggs, milk, potatoes, 40 lbs. of dry goods, and fresh fruit and vegetables (when in season) to each family once a month.
All the food is gathered by the food bank, packaged and delivered to us for distribution once a month.
Each family must be pre-approved (provide copy of DD-214 or VA medical card) and meet certain federal income guidelines.
This program is funded by our local Legion's gambling winnings. Our state law requires that 60 percent of all gambling wins go back into the community. We have several Legions using part of their winnings to fund this program:
Frank P. Hommon American Legion Post 24, Huntingdon, PA
Cloyd K. Davis American Legion Post 150, Petersburg, PA.
William P. Spyker American Legion Post 520, Alexandria, PA
Mapleton PA American Legion Post 322, Mapleton, PA
Simpson-Hunt American Legion Post 107, Mt. Union, PA
We kicked off the program in January 2018. Our goal was to feed 100 families, we reached that goal in April 2018. We currently serve 123 families in Huntingdon County (Pa).
