Basic training in 1971 was held at Fort McClellan, Ala., for Women's Army Corps. Early one morning we had a terrific thunder, lightning and rain storm come through the base. We could hear one of the recruits crying in the darkness, but did not know where she was. Someone close to the switches flipped on the lights in the bay and found that the young recruit had taken cover under her bunk because she she was terrified of storms.
