Basic combat training February to April 1969 at Fort Campbell, Ky., E-1-1

My worst experience is an easy one. In the third or fourth week of training, one of the guys only two bunks from mine went on sick call, and two or three days later our drill sergeant informed us he had died of meningitis. I can't recall his name, but it was a very sad time for our whole company. A couple days later there was a service for him in one of the chapels on post, and that was the end of it.

My most fun day was when our company was on a work day, and two of us were sent to the Reception Center handing out equipment to the new guys. It didn't take us long to catch on to the fact we could yell and scream at these new guys. It was a really fun day.
