Fire drill victim

In 1961, I was at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. They worked us so hard that I slept like a log. I took an upper bunk because the only thing that would wake me up is the light bulb directly over my head.

One night I awoke to my drill instructor shining a flashlight directly into my eyes and telling me that I was "dead." Apparently, we had just had a fire drill and the guard forgot to turn on the lights, so I slept through the whole thing. I was promptly escorted outside to see that the whole squadron was waiting for me.

Because of me, we had numerous fire drills that night, and you can bet that no one let me sleep through them again. I don't think that my feet hit the floor all night. Fun times.
