Fort Jackson, SC, September of 1961

We had just finished gas mask training. The training was about putting and taking off the mask as well as how to clear and so on, when they told us to take a break. Well, then the cadre started popping tear gas. Being at the back, I saw this happening and began to put on my mask. Then a flash went by me. It was Willie from Baltimore, running with his hands over his face, screaming very loudly. He ran straight into a tree and knocked himself out cold. I don't think Willies feet had ever touched ground until he was in the Army. Well anyway, I got to laughing so hard that I did not clear my mask, so I got it good too. Great memory.
