My basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

All I really recall is that it was freezing cold in January. They call the fort "Little Korea." It was really hard at times, but it was just the discipline I needed at that time. I'm grateful for the training I received.

I feel I was the "smart one" for joining the Army, whereas my family and friends thought I was crazy. When I got discharged in 1966, not one family member or friend asked about my service because they were ashamed of what they did to the returning vets.

I was stationed two miles from Dachau.

As far as I'm concerned they were all cowards and I was the smartest of all. It molded me into the man I am, and I've had the most wonderful life and have lived the longest so far.
