Basic training in 1969 at Fort Dix, N.J.

Drafted into the Army on May 1, 1969, I spent most of the day on a slow train ride from New Cumberland, Pa., to Fort Dix, N.J. On arrival it was hair cuts (buzz cuts) and getting issued clothing. It was a long day.

My fondest memory was Mother's Day. It was the first time we were allowed off the company area since arriving. We were allowed to attend chapel on the base. I don't remember the sermon, but the service was packed and there were a lot of tears being held back. For most of us it was the first time away from Mom on Mother's Day.

My worst memory is the ankle deep sand on "infantry walk" marching to and from the shooting range. Every time I go to the beach I am vividly reminded.
