Lost Wedding Band

I was married just 10 days before shipping out to basic training.

I "won" one of the last draft lotteries late in 1970. But after talking with the Recruiter, I decided to join as a Regular, and signed-up for four years with the United States Army Security Agency.

I was assigned to the Basic Training Facility at Fort Dix, New Jersey.

Because my wedding band caused a lot of discomfort when doing the various exercises, I would remove it from my finger and place it in my uniform shirt pocket and fasten the button.

Well, one day we were doing some overhead exercises that involved some upside-down maneuvers. Evidently, my shirt button came undone and the ring fell out! I was devastated when I discovered it was missing and was unsure of exactly where I had lost it.

Back at the barracks that evening I approached the Drill Sgt. in charge and reluctantly asked permission to go back over the various training areas to look for the ring.

Well, the Sgt. was very considerate (something I never expected!!) and volunteered several of my fellow trainees to assist me.

Luckily we found the ring and I avoided having to tell my new wife that I had just lost my wedding band!

I keep it on my finger ALL the time now and don't want to risk losing it again!
