In 1967 I was at Ft Bragg for my basic training. We had Robert "Bob" Hayes, wide receiver and John Niland, offensive guard in our unit.
Bob would give us half the obstacle course head start and still finish first. I had to fight John in the hand to hand pit. He would toss me and knock down the guys next to us. I would try to toss him and he would pick me up. I told him to just fall and help me out. He said I did not pay him enough to fall. I told him we only learned enough hand to hand to get out butts kicked in a bar fight. In battle, you did not want to be that close to the enemy. So he did fall and we all passed.
It was an interesting basic training with them in our unit.
