I went through Basic Training at Fort Gordon, Ga. in the Summer of 1969. I can still remember the summer sun at the rifle range.

The Range Officer told us to put our M-16 in the stand on the ground which was all sand and gave us the safety lecture that drug on and on.

The sun beat down on black metal and black plastic. It was agony to pick up our weapon, hold it tight to our cheeks and fire.
