Volunteers

I attended Navy Boot Camp at Great Lakes Illinois in 1968. We were under orders from reveille to taps each day. We were even ordered to choose a religion, and that "WE would attend services". There was, however one exception. One afternoon we were marched to the blood donor center. We were informed that we would not be forced to donate blood, but "They would like 100% participation, and that all blood would be sent to Vietnam". We would then be given the remainder of the day off, along with orange juice and cookies.
If we chose not to donate, they "Would find something else for us to do while the others donated, and rested-up". Just outside the door were a shovel, sand pile, and wheel barrow. No one had to ask what that "Something else" may be. We had 100% participation!
