Picked to volunteer

After completing advanced training at Ft. Dix, NJ, in 1967, we were waiting for orders for our next assignment. They kept us busy with various work details throughout the entire post.
On morning during a formation of several companies, the Sergeant randomly selected eight individuals from the group. After the formation was over, he told us that we were selected for a duty. We were not told what the duty was about. We had to volunteer if we wanted to do it, and everyone volunteered.
We were sent to Long Island in New York City to be stand-ins for an Army training film. This was a wonderful experience for an entire week. The barracks was a hotel at some point, and there was a theater right across the street. We walked there every morning.
Every night we had a pass to explore the city. We were not permitted to have civilian clothes while at Ft. Dix. We had to wear our dress uniform everywhere we went. A short walk from our barracks, we could enter the subway. Everytime we came up, it was like another world.
Getting to travel around New York City was a great experience that I'll aways remember.
