Army

It was the summer of 1968. Fort Campbell, Ky. The months of July and August. Hot. We had just returned to our barracks from a march with full gear. We got the whistle to fall out. We were only in our barracks for a few minutes when we got the whistle to reassemble with full gear again. I was in the midst of removing my web gear, so I hurriedly started putting it back together. At the formation, the drill sergeant pointed out that I had missed a hook on my web belt, so the weight of my canteen caused said belt to sag. He asked me if I thought I was Audie Murphy. I replied no. Apparently he didn't believe me, cause he made me run around the 3 platoons, holding my rifle over my head, shouting "I'm Audie Murphy" for several minutes. Alas, I wasn't the only poor soul in this position, as I was being followed by another soldier yelling "I'm John Wayne!"
