Following orders – precisely!

In the summer of 1972, I took the Army Reserve basic combat training unit I commanded to Fort Jackson, S.C. for annual training. We integrated with a regular Army unit cadre where recruits were in their first two weeks of Army life. “Doing exactly as you are told” was highly stressed.
On one extremely hot day, we were eating lunch in the cadre area of the mess hall with a recruit serving as a runner for the group. A drill sergeant asked the recruit if there was any cold lemonade. The recruit answered yes. The drill sergeant then told him to “bring me a glass.” And that is exactly what the recruit brought – an empty glass!
