A cold shower

Basic training memories caught my eye. I smiled, then chuckled because so many things happened. It’s an experience that should be an important part of every young man as he participates in life’s passages. We went into the service as young, cool kids, and came of age ready for battle and well prepared for whatever, wherever, thanks to basic training and its introduction to what the branch expects of you. Many memories of that period of my life were actually funny, enough some 60 years later which evoke a smile, chuckle and even a belly laugh!
Winter was cold at Fort Knox, Kentucky. We were to report to the barracks after supper chow, dressed in full combat readiness and report for weapons. Everybody was puzzled. During formation, as we waited for transportation, most of the GIs were shivering and complaining about the cold. Finally, we arrived at our destination – a large plot. The exercise was to crawl to the other side in our military gear as bullets would pass over our heads. To make matters worse, the field was wet and muddy. Most began to moan and groan. The journey was cold and miserable as we plowed through the wet terrain. Everyone made it to the destined area. After formation, we were taken to a barracks and told to strip down – a whole company of naked tank men. Orders were given to shower – icy, cold water. Then the fun began. Troopers began to howl and head out. Noncoms were there in a military manner and chased the guys back in. Resistance ran rampant. I felt warmth because my body became accustomed. Later, many joked that we were glad that it only happened once!
