No power – no problem!

I was drafted into the Army and had to report for duty in Detroit. From there I was sent to Fort Wayne for my physical and then to Fort Knox for uniforms. One evening there I was scheduled to wax and buff the floor of the captain’s office. There was a very bad storm and lightning which knocked out the power, so I could not use the electric buffer. I thought I didn’t have to then do the job. How wrong I was! I found out the ingenuity of the Army. They gave me an Army blanket and had two privates hold flashlights while I got down on my hands and knees and buffed the captain’s office floor.
Another memory was at Fort Ord, California. I was always a very slow eater. Toward the end of the meal, the master sergeant shouted “The last 15 guys have to clean up the mess hall!” I could not believe my eyes, watching how quickly everyone could eat! Needless to say, I kept eating slowly, and every meal, I was always one who had to clean up the mess hall.
