A 15-4 basic training, Fort Knox, Ky., October 1965

I was inducted into the Army at Fort Hayes, Columbus, Ohio, on Oct. 5, 1965. I was 18 years old, 5 ft. 8 in tall and weighed 106 pounds. My drill instructor Sgt. William Watson told me I would make a good jockey. I was the first one in line for the mess hall all 3 meals and was assigned another troop to stand at my table, and when my tray was empty he would go refill it. When I completed basic training I weighed 145 pounds. I grew up a lot in basic training and my tour in the Army. I was stationed in Germany after attending cook & bakers school, also at Ft. Knox. Sgt. Watson was KIA in Vietnam.
