Honoring the legacy of service

Toledo, OH

My name is James N. Phillips Jr., and I am a member of Post 468 in Sylvania, Ohio. I just started a nonprofit in Lucas County, Ohio. The nonprofit is Remember Veteran Grave Markers Inc. (RVGM), and its purpose is to honor the memory of veterans, by location and by preserving the government-issued veteran headstones and grave markers found in municipal and private cemeteries.
Were you aware that there are more veterans buried in private and municipal cemeteries than in the National Cemetery system? Unfortunately, while this is true, the level of care given to these headstones and grave markers at private and municipal cemeteries sinks to the level of disrespect.
RVGM Inc. seeks to elevate this in Lucas County, and through its example perhaps in the United States. While it is a kind gesture to place a wreath and an American flag on their grave, perhaps we can take it one step further and actually care for the grave of the veteran.
Every year Legionnaires comment on the conditions of the graves they place flags at, thinking there are others to do this, but sadly there aren't. The words of Travis Manion resonate here: if not me, then who? Or said differently, from Isaiah 6:8: "Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?' 'Here I am: I said, send me!'"
