Scouts and Legion Honor Veterans in Centennial Ceremonies

Buck-Dubiel Post 101 works with local Scouts

Somers, CT

Broad-smiled Legionnaires warm-heartedly acknowledged recent partnering/teaming with our Somers, Conn., BSA Scouts Troop 387 and Cub Scout Pack 83. At a Feb. 28, 2019, Buck-Dubiel Post 101 monthly meeting, the Scouts and their leaders received recognition letters and will also receive back-ordered BSA legion patches for their uniforms in gratitude for their reverence of veterans and their support/recognition of The American Legion’s 100 years of service to veterans and their community.
Our Somers Scouts jointly participated in Post 101’s 2018 “Veterans Day Remembrance” and “Wreaths Across America” ceremonies which were held in our Somers community on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2018, and Saturday, Dec. 15, 2018, respectively.
Each of the seven Veterans Day services were held at memorials and cemeteries in Somers and included a short speech by Post 101 Commander David McCaffrey, a benediction by Vice Commander/Chaplain Richard Szoka, followed by a 21-gun salute by our color guard (led by Sergeant-at-Arms Lee Hareld) and the playing of Taps by our chaplain.
The post’s "Wreaths Across America" program began in 2013 to honor our veterans laid to rest in Somers' cemeteries. Our Scouts participated in the 2018 ceremony conducted at Somers Center Cemetery and led by our Legionnaire of the Year Leroy Collins. The Scouts were instrumental in helping to place wreaths purchased by Post 101, as well as those purchased by friends and families, on the graves of our honored veterans at each of the five cemeteries in town.
Post 101 is very proud of the support and achievements of our Somers BSA Scouts Troop 387 and Cub Scout Pack 83, touted McCaffrey. Cub Scout Pack 83 Leader Michael Nero was key in forging the relationship between Post 101 and the Somers Scouts because he felt that “a tighter connection” between the Scouts and The American Legion would benefit veterans, Scouts and the community.
In celebration of The American Legion’s 100th birthday, our post continues to look for opportunities to engage in harmonious efforts such as teaming with our local Scouts. We truly strive to set the example of a perfect circle of patriotism/honor, love, collaboration and relationship.
Join Buck-Dubiel Post 101 and experience/contribute to community harmony and celebrate our legacy of duty, honor and commitment.
